Customer Reviews

Our water heater (30-gallon) went out (started leaking) mid-week... I called our plumbing contractor to see if we could install a tankless unit. He said it would take a few days to get one, but we got it by Saturday (struggled through with cold showers). Anyway, after he arrived with the Navien NR-240, I jumped right online to check them out... and saw some "skeptical" reviews, and was hesitant... but needed hot water, so I let him continue the install. I mentioned what I saw about 1" gas line minimum, new gas meter, etc. ALL NONSENSE. The unit only has a 3/4" input anyway. We only have a 3/4" to our house. Our unit works FINE with our 3/4" main gas line, and we also have forced-air heating, gas dryer, and stove... ALL work just fine. The facts: The heater does take a "little" longer to get the HOT water to the faucet if you have low-flow outlets like we do (you need 1/2 GPM minimum to start it up)... but once it gets there (less than a minute for the LONG run to our shower) it will not run out--EVER... you can take a 6-hour long shower if you want to... AND, everyone else can be running hot water also... you can't over-draw this unit... wow! Cons: If you use the kitchen sink to rinse something off, and turn on the single-handle faucet like we have, you most likely turn it on where it also calls for hot water... but the hot water won't get to you before you are finished rinsing your item off... you can hear the operating fan come on (which uses some energy). That is about it for CONS. The exhaust up to the roof is PLASTIC! This thing is SO efficient, the air coming out of it is barely warm. ALL of the energy goes into heating the water. I never yell at my wife for using all the hot water up anymore... peace in the household!

I would not recommend installing Navien tankless hot water hdaters. We have had nothing but trouble with ours, and the customer service people at Navien never responded to my request for help that I entered on their website. Our contractor installed 2 Navien Model NR-240 tankless hot water heaters in our new construction home in June 2010. Since then we have had continuing problems with the hot water heaters, specifically the hot water recirculating pumps. When we first moved in the tanks did not recirculate the hot water as advertised, and we complained to the contractor. He had the installer take a look, and they couldn't figure it out, so they contacted the company, who sent a rep out to look at the units. They eventually got it working, but it stopped working again after several months. We have since had several other plumbers out to work on the units. Many don't know how to use them, they are quite difficult to program, apparently. One plumber finally took it on and after studying the manual figured ot the problem, and he had them working again. However, again, after a few months they stopped working.
The problem with these units is it takes a very long time for the hot water to reach the faucet. In our kitchen, we have resigned ourselves to doing dishes with lukewarm water, because it takes so long for the water to get hot it just isn't worth the wait. The same happens in the shower in the morning, might as well turn on the shower, go have a cup of coffee, and then maybe the water will start getting warm. Cold water showers are no fun, so you better allow an extra 15 minutes in the morning if you plan to install Navien hot water heaters.
What really upsets me is that Navien has a place on their website to submit customer service requests. I submitted a request for help, which they promptly ignored. They apparently do not care about having happy customers. Don't waste your time or money with these Navien hot water heaters, that is my recommendation after using them in our new home for almost two years, and trying numerous times to have them fixed.
